Mark Arthur Bar Chairs
These luxurious bar chairs were meant to be a capstone to my studies in furniture design and completion of a semester at gallup guitars in Michigan. I wanted to make furniture at the level of craft and refinement only typical of fine instruments. These chairs were one of the first pieces I made post university.
This set of 4 was crafted out of solid Pensilvania sugar and tiger maple. Some sections have intricate laminations and bend that adds significant strength to the design.
The seat and backrest are wrapped in thin dove leather, from Napa California. The leather is soft to the touch and adds the perfect amount hold the seat, yet is smooth enough to pivot on.
After many prototypes, the angles and curves of the seat and backrest have been refined to help promote good posture; by holding you in an upright, yet relaxed position.
Each chair is carefully assembled to our high quality standards to last a lifetime of use and abuse. Each of these chairs is held together with 12 mortise and tenons, 14 blind pegs, 4 curved half laps, 4 double tenons, 2 bolts, 1 sliding dovetail featuring 2 bent laminations for the foot rest, and one tapered bent lamination for the back rest.
These are finished with a natural oil based bled to provide durability against water and food stains while maintaining a satin sheen.
The namesake refers in part to my late grandfather Arthur. He was truly a class act, and a master in many fields. We shared a creative mind and sprit, and would talk about nuances of construction methods and design for hours. These chairs are an ode to our relationship.
